The Scarlet Hour’s bassist and songwriter, Mel Butler, recently swapped her bass for guest vocal duties on the iconic song “Just Like Honey” during The Jesus And Mary Chain’s recent performance at The Brudenell in Leeds.
This unexpected surprise came about when Mel, who also manages JAMC’s social media accounts and website, turned up at the band’s soundcheck to photograph the show. It was guitarist William Reid who asked Mel to step in on guest vocals for Just Like Honey.
“I had some big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of some amazing guest vocalists, such as Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade, actress Scarlett Johansson and Bernadette Denning”, said Mel.
“Of course I was nervous”, she adds, “not for being on stage, but to sing in public one of my all-time favourite songs and also it was my first time singing on stage.”
She goes on to add, “I hesitated at first to take up the offer but I then seized the moment. I mean, to actually be up on stage and sing with my favourite band is something that does not happen everyday. Once in a lifetime experience. It was amazing.”
So, does this mean we will see some vocal action from Mel with The Scarlet Hour?
“Definitely not. I am not a natural singer. I am quite happy sticking to bass duties”.
